How do I visit the media center?

The Media Center is open daily at 9AM so students can check in/out books.  Classes are signed up for Media Center visits by the teachers.  You must have your student ID with you inorder to use any of the resources in the Media Center.  You may also visit the website for information at http://www.dms.ocps.net/media_center.html


What is a typical school day like?
Each student has four Core classes with his or her team of teachers. These subjects are English, Math, Social Studies, and Science. Students also have two elective/wheel classes daily.  That means each student has a total of 6 classes per day.


What is an academic team?
Every student is a member of an academic team. This means that you will be assigned to a small group of teachers. These teachers are responsible for teaching Core subjects to their team of students. You will get to know these teachers very well. The teachers plan team activities, establish team guidelines, and convene team meetings.


How many teachers will be on my team?
Each team in 6th grade consists of 4 academic core teachers; Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.


How much homework will I have?
On average 6th grade students will have approximately 45 to 75 minutes of homework a night. This is a basic guideline; individual pacing and class selection will impact the time it takes to complete the assigned homework.


How much time will we have between classes?
Students have approximately four minutes between classes.  It is very important that you concentrate on getting to your next class instead of spending the time socializing; you will not have time to do both!


How will I know how to get around campus?
You are encouraged to visit during the 6th Grade Orientation. At this time you will be able to locate your classes, the gymnasium, cafeteria, bathrooms, etc. We will also have staff on hand to assist you.


What do I do if I am sick and cannot come to school?
Notify the attendance office at (407) 384-1555. Get better soon; you will be missed.


What does a counselor do?
Counselors provide guidance and support for students and their families, develop class schedules, delivers affective lessons in the classroom and offers other valuable services.


When can I get a drink or use the bathroom?
Water fountain visits and trips to the restroom usually take place in between classes or when necessary (within reason).


Will we have planners?
Yes, we currently have our own planners that are personalized for our school.


How much does lunch cost?
A full lunch: pizza slice, milk and fries, for example, will cost approximately $2.50. However, many other additional lunch and snack items are available.

Do I get my own locker?
No, unfortunately we do not have lockers for student use.  Therefore students should have a comfortable backpack to carry their books and materials during the school day.
