Discovery Middle School opened in August 1991 and was located at 11550 Lokanotosa Trail. It was a modular school with multiple relocatable classrooms and four permanent buildings. It was intended to be a temporary facility for this school. In June 1997 a new school was opened at 601 Woodbury Road. It was built with a permanent capacity for 1455 students. It includes 2 two-story buildings for teams of students, a media center, a vocational building, a music building, a gymnasium, an administrative building, a cafeteria, and portables.

Our student population reflects the diversity of the community. Approximately 55 percent are Caucasian, 9 percent African American, 28 percent Hispanic, and 8 percent in other categories. The student enrollment is 992. We have approximately 27 percent of our students enrolled in the free or reduced lunch program. Thirty percent of our student population is involved in exceptional education programs made up of the following: Specific Learning Disabilities (11%), Emotional/Behavioral Disorder (<1%), Mild Cognitive Disability (<1%), Hearing Impaired (<1%), Language/Speech Impaired (<%), Gifted (16%), and Autism Spectrum Disorder (2%). Ten percent of our students are enrolled in our Sheltered Instruction classes for language. Intensive reading and math classes target students who are below grade level. Elective offerings include band, orchestra, chorus, art, guitar, computers, and physical education.

During the 2007-2008 school year our staff will be comprised of 110 members. This includes the following: instructional staff, administrators, paraprofessionals, clerical, cafeteria, and custodial personnel. Our staff is committed to providing the best educational program for all students. To achieve this goal, staff members continually attend professional development workshops and take courses to increase their knowledge and proficiency.

Our school philosophy is to provide a stimulating learning environment within a caring and supportive atmosphere. An analysis of the conditions of the community and the needs of our school was conducted. From the information received, priorities to be addressed by our School Improvement Plan were identified. The priority areas are as follows:

  • Student achievement in the areas of reading, writing, math, and science
  • Student learning environment
  • Parent involvement
